My Small Village
I loved my small village at first sight. It was founded in 1237. Today it has 800 inhabitants. It lies near Hanover, on the small river Aller. It has two old churches, the first of them was built in 1237, and the other one was built in 1866. It had a small shop, which closed, bit it still has a restaurant. Although we moved here only several years ago and I'm alone so much, I don't think I've ever once felt lonely. Working, reading, music, dancing, writing and gardening are my life. My fascination of nature and enjoying the ownership of a piece of land gave me satisfaction. I could not live without my daily tour admiring my garden and looking at all the lovely flying birds and green lawns and meadows and not without touching every leaf, bush and tree, which are all my buddies.
This small village inspired my respect for human life and culture, and it inspires my thinking.
In summer our mayor and our neighbours operate a small ferry boat on which you can cross the river Aller. Then a lot of people wait for their little ferry boat with a handmade mechanical old rudder, in order to be taken to the other side of the river. A lot of lovely couples, tourist with bicycles, were among them. They look like having great expectations for their lives. The farmers celebrate their annual harvest and marksmen festivals passionately, their wedding anniversaries and birthday parties. The most impressing property of this village is its natural beauty, in particular its oak trees and bushes. It`s unforgettable how a deer, two summers ago, was running quickly through my garden. I have the spectacular view of a red sun setting behind the river Aller, and a view of handsome horses, which I can see across the street, through my windows, who leisurely walk around, eat grass, play and even pose for photographs. Recently the news magazine Der Spiegel reported about a lonesome wolf named Kurti who tours our region, and who has already been seen in our village.
At summer mornings my breath was often taken away by the awe inspiring friendly beauty of the scene. It had a gaiety, with the joyful singing of birds in the trees, which I had never expected in my life. Around my house are the neighbour’s houses and a dense green forest with large old trees. In the distance across the street there stretches a flat green land as far as the eye could see. I had no sense of confinement nor of gloom, but rather of openness and a boundless flat space where the exultant fantasia could wander with delight. Here exists a natural authority. Life here follows natural rules.
The green glittering land and my warm hearted neighbours, especially my neighbour Hanna, offered me a smiling welcome to this beautiful village in the north of Germany. Very soon it has become my village, my sweet home.
